okay i have to say something now that i read an article more in depth & holy shit is this fucking disgusting. taken from this bbc article ;

“Given the passions and feelings connected with the use of Irish Gaelic, there is a sad risk that the phrase would be regarded as some form of slogan or that its inclusion without translation would, of itself, be seen as a political statement,” said Judge Stephen Eyre, QC, chancellor of the Diocese of Coventry.

he basically said that the entirity of the irish language is a political statement, that speaking it is a political act & putting these totally heartfelt worlds on the gravestone of an irish catholic woman who completely assimilated to english culture but wanted some memoriam of her culture in her children’s wishes, is a political act.

Untranslated Irish words would be “unintelligible to all but a small minority of readers”, he ruled in his judgment for the Church of England consistory court on 6 May. He authorised a memorial which included a translation of the phrase in English.

why does every passer by need to understand the words on a gravestone of somebody they don’t know? why was this even taken into account?

& you wanna know why it would be unintelligible to all but a small minority of readers? bc its IRISH ; a language the english tried for CENTURIES to wipe out. they punished people for speaking our culture’s language, they killed people for it. the amount of irish people who know their own culture’s language is horrifically small & it’s entirely because of the racist onslaught the english perpetrated against us when they decided to try & wipe out our culture. also, why does it matter to anyone but the family what words are on THEIR MOTHER’S GRAVESTONE?

also, this battle has gone on for TWO YEARS. two years where this poor family has not been able to grieve properly for their beloved lost mother, where they can’t honour her with their culture & their language that they have probably fought to keep alive.

i’m so fucking disgusted.

Almost three fucking years after she died, her family is finally allowed to put her national language on her gravestone.

cavehags:

“The closer rebel characters come to a definable ideology, the more likely they are to be written as villains. At the same time, the emotive aspects of rebellion - the heroism of the underdog, the thrill of fighting the power - are rendered safe for public consumption by taking out any explicit political ideology. … The effect of all this is to suggest that violence is somehow more sympathetic the less its perpetrators believe - that heroism decreases the more detailed your policy proposals get. If Luke Skywalker was fighting for galactic communism, or Daenerys intended to create a series of peasants’ councils to govern Westeros, or Harry Potter wanted to smash the Ministry of Magic and overturn wizard supremacy, we would have to confront serious and difficult questions about when political violence is appropriate, for whose benefit, and for what purposes. I don’t believe those are questions pop culture is incapable of asking. They are questions we do not want to ask.”

For #WomensHistoryMonth, learn about Lucy Hicks Anderson!
.
Born in 1886 in Kentucky, Lucy expressed her feminine identity from a young age, and preferred to be called “Lucy” over her birth name. Doctors encouraged her parents to follow suit and raise her as the girl she was.
.
As an adult in the 1920’s, Lucy married her first husband and gained a reputation as a socialite, hosting lavish dinner parties, winning baking contents with her chef skills, and running a boarding house that secretly sold liquor during Prohibition.
.
After her second marriage, she was tried for perjury in an argument that accused her of “failing to disclose” that she had been assigned male at birth on her marriage license. Though she was convicted, she and her husband lived out a peaceful life in Los Angeles, and her trial laid the groundwork for the fight for marriage equality to come in later years.

In many cultures, ethnic groups, and nations around the world, hair is considered a source of power and prestige. African people brought these traditions and beliefs to the Americas and passed them down through the generations.

In my mother’s family (Black Americans from rural South Carolina) the women don’t cut their hair off unless absolutely necessary (i.e damage or routine trimming). Long hair is considered a symbol of beauty and power; my mother often told me that our hair holds our strength and power. Though my mother’s family has been American born for several generations, it is fascinating to see the beliefs and traditions of our African ancestors passed down. We are emotionally and spiritually attached to our hair, cutting it only with the knowledge that we are starting completely clean and removing stagnant energy.

Couple this with the forced removal and covering of our hair from the times of slavery and onward, and you can see why so many Black women and men alike take such pride and care in their natural hair and love to adorn our heads with wigs, weaves, braids, twists, accessories, and sharp designs.

Hair is not just hair in African diaspora cultures, and this is why the appropriation and stigma surrounding our hair is so harmful.

don’t get me wrong, im SO excited that people are discovering their genders and coming out as trans, but GOD so many of y’all are coming out as not-cis and then stopping there and not learning anything about the community.

like yall will come out and then continue to be just as transphobic as cis people? like you do NO research on the trans community, no talking to other trans people, then say transphobic shit and use “im [x] so i can’t be transphobic 😌”

like

  1. nonbinary people are trans. not every nonbinary person identifies as trans but nonbinary IS under the trans umbrella. don’t get mad at people for making a post talking about trans people and be like “nonbinary people exist too :(“ yes they do and they were included because they’re trans. if they meant “binary trans people” they would have said “binary trans people”
  2. pronouns DO NOT equal gender. going by they/them does not make you nonbinary. not all nonbinary people use they/them. binary trans people can use they/them. even cis people can use they/them. anyone can use any pronouns. INCLUDING neopronouns.
  3. if you know someone’s pronouns and that person does NOT use they/them and you call that person by they/them pronouns, you ARE misgendering them. they/them is used as a weapon against binary trans people ALL THE TIME to invalidate their womanhood or manhood. using they/them for someone who doesn’t use they/them is misgendering and it’s transphobic.
  4. stop using language that excludes nonbinary people. “men and women -”. no. shut up. just say “people”
  5. stop gendering genitalia. stop gendering chromosomes. stop gendering hormones.
  6. if you call someone “amab” or “afab” without their consent, you’re misgendering them. there’s no universal amab and afab experiences anyway. there are very few circumstances when amab and afab should be used anyway. if you can’t use it properly, don’t use it
  7. stop using radfem/transmed/transphobe arguments and rhetoric.
  8. listen to trans women when they say you’re being transmisogynistic. (this goes the same for listening to trans men about transandrophobia, and the same for listening to nonbinary people about exorsexism. but the majority of transphobia i’ve seen from the new people in the community is transmisogyny. because you have not been unlearning your transmisogynistic ideas from before you joined the community)
  9. your experience in transness is not universal. you do not speak for the community, so stop acting like it. ESPECIALLY if you’ve only been in the community for a few months
  10. stop telling cis people they get a pass to be transphobic. stop giving cis people misinformation about the trans community

This is kind of tiring to read. Like I’m not saying it’s wrong but. Literally it’s tiring enough existing. Going through the things we’re going through on a daily basis. I have enough trouble feeding myself every day does it seem like I have energy to analyze and overthrow the gender construct system that has been indoctrinated in me for my entire life over the course of a weekend?

I will be respectful of people and advocate as I encounter opportunities and teach and learn as I go. But expecting people to do extensive research in order to stay up to date on the Best Practices of community consensus- if there even is a community consensus, which let’s be real there’s generally not- in order to not be considered transphobic? Especially when we know the lines will be in different places next week or next year. It’s just unrealistic. Especially when this post is directed at people who are, by the post’s own declaration, just starting to see through the fourth wall of the gender construct system.

Like y’all really want the baby gays to pass the gay SATs real quick. Not everyone’s got time for that study course. Again not saying anything in this post is wrong, just try to understand that it’s a lot at first and even later on.
